Cr8Mo2SiV — Cr8Mo2SiV Cold Work Tool Steel — is a cold work tool steel supplied at HRC 58-62. Its chemistry centres on 1.00-1.05% carbon, 7.80-8.50% chromium, 1.80-2.10% molybdenum and 0.80-1.20% vanadium. Upgraded Cr12Mo1V1 — toughness and wear resistance in balance. It is available from stock as precision-ground hardened round bar from Φ2 to Φ100 mm, and as machined rotary die bodies made to drawing.
What Cr8Mo2SiV is, and where it fits
Grade selection is about matching the dominant failure mode. Cr8Mo2SiV's role in the range is clear: high toughness with high hardness. If your dies fail by gradual wear, prioritise wear resistance. If they chip or crack, prioritise toughness — which usually means accepting a slightly lower hardness.

Working hardness and what each band is for
Cr8Mo2SiV hardens across a wide window, and the hardness you choose changes the tool's behaviour more than the grade does. Higher hardness buys wear resistance and edge retention at the cost of toughness; lower hardness does the reverse.
| Band | Hardness | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Primary working range | 55 - 62 | First choice for standard production tooling |
| Secondary range | 40 - 54 | Where the application calls for more toughness or more wear resistance |
| Annealed | 28 - 35 | Rough machining, Cavity milling, Pre-heat treatment |
| Pre-hardened | 40 - 48 | Medium-load punches, Pre-hardened die tooling, Precision milling |
| Hardened | 58 - 62 | Heavy-load punches, Progressive dies, High-precision die-cutting blades |
Cr8Mo2SiV for hardened round bar and rotary dies
| Product line | Suitability | Working hardness | Typical applications |
|---|---|---|---|
| hardened round bar | Recommended (5/5) | HRC 60-62 | High-precision die-cutting blades, Progressive die punches, Precision shearing blades |
| custom rotary dies | Recommended (5/5) | HRC 60-62 | High-precision rotary dies, Paper slitting rollers, Film slitting rollers |
When to choose Cr8Mo2SiV — and when not to
| Choose Cr8Mo2SiV when… | Look at another grade when… |
|---|---|
| The cutting edge is thin or unsupported — die-cutting rules, fine-pitch profiles | The failure mode is pure abrasive wear with no impact — W2Mo9Cr4VCo8 or PM23 will last longer |
| The die sees repeated impact: progressive-die punches, heavy blanking | The part is a low-volume prototype where Cr12Mo1V1's lower price is decisive |
| You are replacing Cr12Mo1V1 because of chipping rather than wear |
